Preface – Pillow Ghost

On the night of Sep. 23, 2022, Master Lianxiang pointed to a bed pillow and said, “Look! The pillow is moving!” I gave the pillow a closer look. The pillow was moving gradually from one side of the bed to the other. It was a white body squirming from here to there, looking just like a silkworm I raised when I was young.

I said, “It’s fun!”
Master Lianxiang said, “Look! There’s a face on the pillow.”
I saw a grinning ghost face, self-satisfied and naughty.
“Knock it off! I said, “Shimu (Master Lianxiang) is trying to sleep. Could you calm down?!”
The pillow ghost came out from the pillow and ran into the quilt which started wiggling around. I patted the quilt. The ghost couldn’t stand it, fell off the bed, and took off like a flash!

I returned to my room and saw my pillow moving from one side of the bed to the other, then to the center. The pillow was panting.
I asked, “Is playing with the pillow fun?”
The ghost replied, “I like the scent.”
“Why?”
“People leave a strong scent on their clothes, with the next strongest scent left on pillows and quilts. The scent on a pillow is usually stronger than the scent on clothes because clothes are washed frequently whereas pillows are not. Even when pillows are washed, it’s usually just the pillowcase and not the pillow itself. Am I right?
“Do you like the scent on my pillow?”
“Yes, I do.”
“What kind of scent is it?”
“A scent that is rarely encountered. It is the scent of compassion mingled with wisdom, which is quite unusual in this world. With these two scents, my ghost level will be elevated. In the future, I will be liberated from reincarnation in the saha world.”
“That’s about enough! Stop bragging in front of me. Just get on board my Dharma vessel tonight!”
“Thank you, Grandmaster Lu!”
(For the past few years, I have performed bardo deliverance by thousands of Dharma vessels every night. This pillow ghost was delivered to the pure land by a Dharma vessel!)
